GETTING GOING IN LIGHTER WINDS AND HOW TO POINT DOWNWIND

The Fusion’s most obvious strength is its ability to offer incredible stability in strong winds, allowing riders who are ready to test out the high speed capability of their foils, to do so with more comfort and control.

The Fusion’s clean aerodynamics also make it a cinch to crank upwind. Many people have been asking about the technique to ride fast downwind, though. When using a single surface wing, it’s possible to heavily rely on being able to ‘pump’ the wing onto a downwind trajectory. The Fusion is a bit different.

If you’ve been riding single surface wings for a long time, there are some technique adaptations to be aware of with the double surface wing, particularly when it comes to pumping the wing to get going. In lighter winds, or when trying to point downwind, this effect is even greater, and so it’s even more important to make sure the wing has clean airflow and minimal changes to its angle-of-attack.

The Fusion’s most obvious strength is its ability to offer incredible stability in strong wind

General rules for downwind riding on the Fusion:

  • Fly the wing more on its front handle and don’t make pumps with your back hand.
  • Try to hold the wing as steady as possible and let your apparent speed increase.
  • Have some patience and work on fine tuning your position.

On a single surface wing you can pump your back hand to ride on a more downwind angle. On the Fusion you need to carry speed before trying to point more deeply downwind.

To maximise downwind speed, it’s also important to be riding a race style hydrofoil.

To go from a boardstart and then to very soon after try riding fast downwind is more difficult on the Fusion. You need to build up speed first. This is why a good rider who crashes less frequently will really be able to capitalise on its performance.

GET UP TO SPEED FIRST TO RIP QUICKLY DOWNWIND

Essentially, these are racecourse tips, but the Fusion is a freeride weapon, so the following advice applies just as much for ripping around any riding spot at different angles.

On a race course, if you come round a buoy / mark on a broad reach and then hit a downwind section you’ll already be carrying a lot of speed, so you should experience a fantastic advantage.

The bigger challenge, and where you’ll need to analyse your approach and tactics, is if you round the top mark from an upwind leg and then need to point quite sharply downwind. By rounding that mark with a wider radius turn you’ll be able to enter the downwind section carrying speed.

Although you may need to make a wider turn, the added speed you’ll carry throughout that downwind section will be much faster than on a single surface wing.

Essentially, these are racecourse tips, but the Fusion is a freeride weapon, so the following advice

Initially, when coming from the immediate power delivery from single surface wings the Fusion may feel challenging. Once again, please note that smaller race dedicated foils will also make downwind speed and angles easier to achieve.

Taking a bigger size Fusion than you’re used to will also help when racing. Bigger sizes generate more lift, which can be translated into forward speed. The Fusion is very comfortable in the upper wind ranges with its reduced drag producing more effective lift while also allowing you to remain in control.

Ozone Fusion riders secured the top two positions in the men’s IWSA Wingfoil Racing World Tour. Delivering speed with control, this was also the first racing season for our unique double surface wing.

Mathis Ghio had already clinched the title, while Kamil Manowiecki’s win at the final event in Brazil earned him the Vice World Championship.

MATHIS IS THE MAN: 40 KNOTS, DONE! 

After his first sessions on the Fusion wing when he joined Ozone just two months ago, Mathis Ghio boldly stated, “The goal is 40 knots.”. In early July he took his chance to lay down some real speed.

Taking the 3.6m Fusion to tackle a super strong forecast at Le Rouet, France, Mathis became the first wingfoiler to reach a top speed of 40 knots!
