Fusion riders take two of top four spots in Silvaplana’s women’s division

Reigning champion Mathis Ghio, from France, and Poland’s Kamil Manowiecki, riding Ozone Fusion V2 Ultra-X wings, took first and second places at the IWSA WingFoil World Cup after five days of racing in the Swiss Alps at Silvaplana.

At the second stop of a scheduled four World Cups for 2025, Ghio and Manowiecki cemented positions at the top of the rankings after finishing first and second at the opening round in Morocco.

For Ghio, the win in Switzerland means he remains undefeated in 2025 with victory at Défiwing among 600 wingfoilers at Gruissan, France, shortly after landing the Formula Wing European Championship in Turkey.

Engadinwing in Silvaplana also saw two of the top four women riding Ozone Fusion wings: the Czech Republic’s Kristyna Chalupnikova landed second on the podium, with Anaïs Mai Desjardins, from France, fourth.

Ozone Fusion V2 Ultra-X helps capture top spots

The World Cup at Silvaplana lake, at 1,800 metres above sea level with water temperatures at a chilly 12°C, provided a breath-taking backdrop for the drama. But the wind in the mountains was tricky at times, with holes and big shifts that threw even the best riders off their game occasionally.

Ghio, often riding a large 7.3m2 Fusion V2 Ultra-X with its Aluula airframe, won nine bullets out of the opening 20 races, that took him to the grand final with two “match-points”, needing only one more win for victory overall.

But the Frenchman did not always have all his own way. On the opening day’s two long distance races he was beaten into second place twice, while on the penultimate day he crashed into his brother, Romain, in port-starboard incident and retired from one race.

Ghio made no mistakes in the grand final. The Frenchman got the job done and secured overall victory in Silvaplana with the win he needed at the first time of asking.

“It feels amazing to win in Silvaplana,” said Ghio. “It’s such a stunning place with the forests, the mountains and the snow around the lake. But it’s tricky for us to deal with the wind because there are a lot of shifts and different gusts. So you have to be careful to look ahead to see what’s coming. It brings in strategy and tactics, and I’m pleased those skills were working well for me.”

Despite suffering with sickness early in the event, Kamil Manowiecki also had a similarly stellar record, taking eight bullets out of the 20 races. But he was unable to overhaul Ghio in the grand final and finished second overall, leaving him second in the World Cup rankings.

Both Ghio and Manowiecki were delighted with the performance of their Fusion wings, which helped them to the front of the pack.

“We were able to perform extremely well on upwind,” said Ghio. “It’s a very steady wing in the gusts and shifts, something others were
struggling with a little. The power for us was pulling from the front, which means more speed. The wing transforms the power of the wind directly into acceleration due to the stiffness of the Aluula. It’s a huge standout for us both and we loved it.”

One of the sensations of the World Cup was newcomer, Hawaii-based JP Lattanzi, of the US. Riding an Ozone Fusion V2 Ultra-X, he won the final day’s repechage and quarterfinal to reach the semifinal, finishing in a remarkable fifth overall in the end.

Ozone Fusion storms up the rankings

In the women’s competition the Czech, Kristyna Chalupnikova, climbed the rankings when she won the quarterfinal and semifinal. She even won the first race of the final, but in the end had to be content with second overall.

Former kitefoil competitor, France’s Anaïs Mai Desjardins, also showed her growing wingfoil racing pedigree when she finished fourth overall in Silvaplana after battling her way up from the semifinal.

Vayu becomes Official Partner of Ozone Double-Surface Patent

The wingfoil brand, Vayu, has now become an Official Partner of the Ozone Double-Surface patent programme, the technology used in the newly-released Ozone Fusion V2 Ultra-X.

At Engadinwing in Switzerland several athletes using Vayu’s Double-Surfaced wings finished in the top 10 in the men’s and women’s rankings.
