  • JAMIE OVERBEEK SCORES YET ANOTHER BIG AIR PODIUM, THIS TIME AT THE GKA’S LORDS OF TRAM!

    April 4, 2023 / Kitesurf

Ozone’s Dutch star and Woo world record holder, 17-year-old Jamie Overbeek, claimed a well deserved and highly impressive podium at what turned out to be another next-level big air event. Following on from his second place at the Red Bull King of the Air in November, he’s now scored two podiums from two at the biggest of big air events in the sport

Over the last 18 months, the standard of the big air discipline has taken mind blowing steps forward with each passing event, yet there isn’t one true leader. Instead, the fight at the top mostly remains a very tight battle between the emerging young talents who are now dominating the top ranked positions.

Coming off the back of his runners-up medal at the Red Bull King of the Air in November, Jamie Overbeek’s third position at the Lords of Tram in Bacares, France, this weekend proves his arrival as one of the sport’s leading contenders and innovators in this extremely exciting discipline.

The Lords of Tram ran 1st & 2nd April and was host to the first round of the Big Air World Championship discipline on the 2023 GKA Kite World Tour. Round two for these twin-tippers will run in Tarifa between 26th May and 16th June and the GKA hope to add a third stop to decide the Big Air World Championships later in the year.

However, Jamie stands out amongst the pack as he’s currently the most all-round big air rider, having also finished second in the GKA’s Hydrofoil Big Air World Championships in Tarifa in 2022. Both the hydrofoil and twin-tip disciplines will run again at the GKA event in Tarifa, from late May, and Jamie will be looking for wins in both disciplines this time around.

    LORDS OF TRAM RESULT

Although by current standards it was a relative veteran in Liam Whaley (26) who fought his way valiantly back to the top of the podium after a tough few big air seasons, in general this event was another showcase of how the current crop of teenagers are blowing the level of progression wide open.

Right now, youthful belief and natural talent is combining with incredible technical equipment developments. Riders are utilizing the superior handling benefits of their gear (see Jamie’s below) in previously unimaginable wind speeds to land stunningly complex and extreme manoeuvres.

Whaley took the event win over current GKA Big Air World Champion, Andrea Principi, in the final. Throughout the event however, as the older big names such as Marc Jacobs and Aaron Hadlow began to fall, it was the likes of Overbeek and his fellow teenagers who reinforced their leading positions in the new world order.

They are now the ones to beat at events like this, though of course Liam Whaley has just stuck his flag firmly in the ground again too.

Ozone’s big air legend Ruben Lenten co-hosted the livestream and caught up with Jamie after the event:

Congratulations! How do you rate your own performance? What were you stoked with and what will you be working on between now and the next event in Tarifa?
Thanks! I was pretty happy with my consistency. I almost landed all my tricks. Moves like doobie board-offs and the triple back roll contra with a tic-tac in the middle of the trick are very difficult and I was able to land difficult tricks over and over again. I’ll definitely be working on some more board spins and rotations, so yeah, let’s see.

It looked like you kept your head cool and were able to bust out your tricks well between all the gusts. How was the spot feeling and does it go down as an epic competition in your mind?
Yeah, definitely it was really epic. The spot at Bacares has pretty sketchy wind, but when it picks up you can really go big; bigger than anywhere else, even though it’s flat water.

We saw some really good, lofty jumps. How was the standard overall and was there anything that surprised you?
Yeah it’s crazy, especially what’s being done with the double loops right now with rotations, double contras, S-loops, double kite loops. Yeah that level surprised me the most.

Any comments about Andrea and Liam who made the final?
Everyone was riding extremely well in those conditions. It was was pretty scary, but yeah Liam and Andrea just pushed it to the limits and deserved the first and second place.

    JAMIE’S APPROACH

Using a combined quiver approach, Jamie opened up each heat with a barrage of massive mega loop board off combinations with his Ozone Edge 7m (on 24m lines) and Code V3 132cm board to explosive effect.

The Surfr device that each rider wore to show their jump stats on the livestream saw Jamie consistently triggering heights of over 15 metres with megaloop combinations and regularly covering distances well in excess of 150 metres as he carefully coordinated multiple spins with his body at the same time.

In the second half of his heats, Jamie would then switch to a smaller 5m Ozone Enduro V4 (on 25m lines) – the all-rounder in Ozone’s kite line up – capable of faster and tighter turns, allowing him to tackle the critically important double mega loops.

It’s crazy how in the space of 12 months it has become impossible to win a heat in big air kiteboarding competition without landing a double mega loop. Having these two kites in his arsenal, Jamie is showing how the ultimate in powered height and hangtime is possible with the Edge, and the super dynamic handling of the Enduro can be combined for dramatic effect.

Although he lost out in the semi-final to the eventual event winner, Whaley, Jamie’s own performance was one of the most consistent throughout the entire competition; never dropping a heat score below 20 points from a three trick total.

Unlucky to narrowly finish second in his first heat to Jeremy Burlando by just 0.17 points, Jamie didn’t panic and confidently maintained his levels to despatch Nicolas Gambier in round two, Stino Mujl in round three and Giel Vlugt in round four, before meeting Whaley in the semis.

Jamie’s highest heat score (23.06) came in the mini-final against another teen ripper, Italian Lorenzo Casati (2023 KOTA winner), who sadly had to withdraw from the heat after a big crash when his quick release opened mid trick. In fairness however, Jamie already had a commanding lead thanks to his best trick in that heat; a massive contraloop back roll tic-tac (8.83 points), which was going to be a big mountain for the Italian to overcome.

Congratulations to Jamie and all riders who bravely took big air kiteboarding to yet another new level at this event. Stay tuned to Jamie’s Instagram where you’ll see evidence of his latest training preparations for his upcoming GKA twin-tip and hydrofoil big air competitions in Tarifa!
