Starting the season on the right tack!

For the 6th year running Gruissan (south of France) held what has become known as one of the toughest long distance kite races. This was Nico Parlier's first official race of the season after a delayed start due to uni exams and he totally nailed it! Well done Nico!

The Defi Kite Challange brings together a mix of both pros and amateurs, all thrown into the same starting line. The spirit of the race is all about defying the super strong Tramontana winds and maintaining strength & stamina to complete the distance.  320 participants battled it out over three days, attacking the 100km course with a range of 20 to 45+ knts pushing them to their limits.

Day 1 saw raging tramontana winds of up to 50 knts and the sky full of 5m kites with less than half the participants braving it into the water. The wind and sea calmed down for day 2 and 3 and the riders welcomed the perfect conditions with many opting for 15m kites. Event organiser Philippe Bru staggered the races over the three days and as the racing progressed the thighs started to throb! Luckily the riders could get a bit of rest in the evenings and were entertained with parties and concerts.

Throughout the event Nico was once again untouchable on his foil, already a triple winner of the Defi Kite and reigning 2017 world champion, he made no faults thoughout the 3 days. Here's to the rest of the year following suit! Young gun Enzo Pineiro also put on a great show to claim 2nd place, hot on the heels of the senior crew, he'll be one to look out for in next to no time!
