Last weekend we witnessed one of the most surprising stories in the history of snowkite racing. Jonas Lengwiler ended up winning the European Snowkite Championships in the snowboard category being on a snowboard for the first time!
Long story short – Ronny Bollhalder of the Unhooked.ch/kitetracker team, 2016 WISSA world champion on skis, dreamed up a project last summer that should revolutionize snowboard racing. Together with Kessler (www.kessler-swiss.com) they built a 2m long prototype. Unfortunately Ronny suffered an ACL injury 2 weeks before the event which disabled him to compete for the rest of the season. His team mate Jonas Lengwiler jumped in, and although he never stood on a snowboard he was up for taking on the challenge.
One day of training was enough and Jonas was able to finish Friday’s 60km long distance race in 1st place - 25 minutes in front of the 2nd snowboarder and 3rd in the overall ranking with all the skiers. The combo Kessler board and his R1 V2 17m worked perfectly. A similar picture on Saturday’s races – Jonas won them all on his R1 V2 15m and was crowned European Champion 2017.
Congrats also to Felix Kersten for his 2nd place in the ski category riding the R1 V2.
