HYDROFOIL PRO TOUR FINAL - ROCKINGHAM - OZONE R1V2 & TEAM DOMINATE TOUR RESULTS
2016 has been an incredible year for kite racing. The progression of both rider ability and equipment performance has been mind-blowing to witness.
The final of the Hydrofoil Pro Tour could not have been more impressive! Conditions pushed the riders to use all their abilities with every kite size being used making for a fitting end to the season. Over the four days of the event we raced in winds from 7 to 30+ knots, building as each day progressed.
Congratulations to all the riders for pushing the boundaries of hydrofoil racing to a new level. Nico’s and Daniella’s flawless performance was outstanding, winning every race, seventeen bullets each is testament to their training and talent. Nico’s top speed of 41.36 knots and a sustained 40 knot speed on his GPS must surely mean Jimmy Spithill of Oracle Team USA would be up for a showdown with Nico to see who is fastest, the gauntlet is down!
Ozone Kites co-founder Matt Taggart made 9th, reaching his goal of a top ten placing and taking the Grand Master title again. Matt enjoyed his 46th birthday during the Perth final proving you’re never too old to hydrofoil race!
Nico Landauer took 1st in the Masters category and Benjamin Petit came in 3rd and has been noted for having entered every major Hydrofoil race in 2016!
Olly Bridge took out the Youth category and places 2nd overall, Kieran Le Borgn was 2nd youth with Theo L’Hostis 3rd having strong finishes during the final when riding the R1 V1 11m.
In the amazing junior category, Toni and Daniella were on fire, Toni ended up 6th overall and Daniella 10th in the inaugural tour, both aged only 15 that is seriously impressive and a showcase for the future.
New Zealand’s Richard Bates at 61 years young only started foiling 18 months ago and took the Great Grandmaster title.
Our thanks also to the tour founders Robbie Dean, Andy Hansen and Marvin Baumeister, the many volunteers and sponsors that made the inaugural tour so incredible. It truly is the tour that’s for the riders, by the riders and our congratulations to the tour founders for their hard work and dedication to the sport.
Also special mention to Rob, the title sponsor of the final stop Rockingham Apartments, the place to stay in Rockingham right on the spot. The event was also extra special thanks to the amazing energy of the Rockingham Council, Yacht Club, the hosts for the event, amazing people and thanks to the flawless race committee.
Special thanks to all riders that have chosen to race with the Ozone, it was mind blowing to see 70% of the tour riding the R1 V2. The results in every division speak for themselves and showcases the R1 V2’s race performance pedigree. Since 2007 we have been dedicated to the sport of kite racing. Racing is in our blood having come from Hang-gliding & Paragliding competition and design. Our head designer Rob Whittall designs our kites, Speed wings and previously Paragliders, he was also a double World Champion in Paragliding and Hang-gliding. This competition success is the pedigree that we bring to our kite designs and the drive to design and build race winning machines.
In 2009 the Ozone Paragliding design team came up with innovations in Paragliding design that radically improved performance and safety of the paragliding world. The Sharknose (http://flyozone.com/paragliders/en/infozone/ozone-sharknose-technology/) and other design features were patented but we have kept them as open source, so that all brands can use our Sharknose design. You just have to look at the 14th FAI European Paragliding Championships & any other Paragliding competitions to see how successful Ozone has been in competition over the past 5 years. The top 11 were on Ozone and 19 of the top 20 were flying the Ozone ENZO 2. 89 of the 150 pilots were flying Ozone: https://airtribune.com/europg2016/results/task1849/comp/overall
Roll on 2017, we are as excited as ever for the future of kite racing. 125 competitors from 25 countries competed in the 2016 Tour, here’s to that doubling in 2017. Every stop has been carefully chosen for its incredible wind, location and potential for fast close exciting racing.
